The Alibi Tiki Lounge

Updated: Feb 15, 2024

When it comes to unique bar experiences, The Alibi in Portland has certainly carved out a niche for itself. It's the kind of place that transports you through time and space, and in this case, that space feels like a kitschy tropical hideaway with a touch of retro charm that's known for its karaoke fans .

The Alibi offers a beverage selection that's as diverse as a box of crayons, with a solid variety of booze to choose from. You can expect to find some truly unique concoctions that earn a perfect 10/10 for their quirkiness. However, be prepared to pay $6 for a short glass of Portland vodka soda that tastes like it's more lime juice than anything else; but has a generous 11% alcohol content. Also, have your patience ready because you'll need to wait around for awhile before you get your hands on your peculiar libation.

Step inside The Alibi, and you'll quickly realize that they've dialed up the ambiance to eleven...on the quirk-o-meter. It's not too loud and the lighting is just dim enough to make you wonder if you've stepped into a time machine. The staff is notably friendly, but their drink-order accuracy leaves something to be desired. As you make your way to the bathrooms, you'll discover they're well-equipped for solo skiing but lacking for group outings. While they offer a lottery and play good music, they skip the TV screens, and don't even get me started on the sticky floors and menus.

The Alibi's food selection adds to its unique charm, offering a Polynesian twist on classic bar fare. From fries and wings to burgers, you'll find a bit of everything. But be warned, patience is a again a needed virtue here. It took so long for our order to arrive that we wondered if they were raising chickens in the back. In fact, they did lose our order at one point, but the silver lining was a round of green tea shots on the house as an apology.

Getting to The Alibi is as easy as navigating your ex's social media profile - they're just 0.2 miles from the nearest MAX station, and you only need to cross one street, earning them an 8/10 for public transit accessibility.

In conclusion, The Alibi is a wacky and whimsical escape, where you can step into a time machine and embrace the uniquely Portland atmosphere. The dimmed lights, quirkiness, and the absence of TV screens might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a place that's sure to leave you with stories to tell. It's not perfect, but it's undeniably memorable - a bit like your weird cousin's wedding.
